Different people have different reasons to use one good micro-blogging site Twitter. But the commonest of its usages involve spreading news, awareness, and opinions. Even the Bollywood stars are busy spreading news and awareness via Twitter. December 1st is marked as world AIDS day, and our UNAIDS goodwill ambassador, Preity zinta went on tweeting messages related to AIDS awareness on this day.
Some of her recent tweets on AIDS read as "On World Aids day I want to appeal to u all today not to fear HIV. Just be safe, use protection and do not stigmatize people living with HIV." "Mother-2-child transmission of HIV really upsets me. We shud B able 2 protect every child frm Hiv! Less ignorance & more awareness is needed!"
Preity Zinta is a multi-faceted icon who is not just a Bollywood star, or a cricket fan, but also an entrepreneur, owner of IPL team "King's Eleven", and of course UNAIDS goodwill ambassador. Interestingly, her ambassadorship has now become two-folded with the latest addition of Tourism Ambassador Tag to her name.
Himachal Pradesh Government has chosen her to be the tourism ambassador of Himachal Pradesh and promote their slogan, "Unforgettable Himachal" & "A Destination for All Seasons and All Reasons" for Indian as well as international tourists, though she is yet to get the formal letter. Initially, HP govt. had chosen Abhishek Bachchan for the same cause but it did not materialize. There can be a possibility that the HP tourism department thought of Zinta because she completed her education from Shimla. (zinta did her schooling from the Convent of Jesus and Mary, Shimla and UG course in English honours as well as a post graduate in criminal psychology from St. Bede's College, Shimla)
She also went to Hamsafar Trust, Mumbai to hear the troubles of the people afflicted with HIV and posted her pic clicked at the trust on her Twitter profile. Her other AIDS related tweet goes this way, "Amazed how judgemental & insensitive we have become. A little love & compassion is all dey need. A friend living with HIV is still a friend!"
It is not just the AIDS awareness for which the Bollywood star uses her Twitter account. She also remembered the 26/11 terrorist attack and paid homage to the martyrs of the black day and also criticized government's prolonged indecisiveness regarding Kasab's case. Some of her related tweets read as, "...How cruel is the echo when memory plays an old tune to the heart... Remembering all the martyrs of 26/11 & saluting their courage & spirit!" also "Don't know y Kasab still sits in jail 4 a year post 26/11. Justice delayed is Justice denied! Its time r Judicial system got an upgrade!"
26/11 really touched every Indian's soul and many celebrities tweeted remembering the black day. "...A prayer, a lit candle, a remembrance in silent thought, seems so inadequate for those that became martyrs... their suffering immense", Amitabh Bachchan tweeted on the same. Even Sachin Tendulkar, who isn't that active a tweeter as Mr. Bachchan or Ms. Zinta, too got quite emotional and tweeted out all his feelings related to 26/11.
Ms. Zinta can also be given the ambassadorship for spreading awareness on Twitter! It is not just AIDS awareness for which she uses Twitter, she loves wildlife too and tweets to urge people to save the tigers. One of her tweets read as "...India has over a billion people and only 1409 tigers! Think about it?"
