Mood Ring Color Meanings - Black

If you have a mood ring and the mood ring color is black, it usually means that you are stressed, frightened or have a deeply ingrained loathing that you are experiencing (or trying to work through) at the moment.
Black is one of the coldest temperatures a mood ring can signify, which means that your hands and fingers are icy cold. This means only one thing: the body is extremely stressed or deeply depressed.
When the body is emotionally stressed, it experiences a powerful "fight or flight" reaction. The brain signals to the organs that certain chemicals be released into the bloodstream, such as adrenaline, cortisol and other stress hormones to temporarily enhance physical strength and speed. Your subconscious mind begins determining whether running or fighting will increase the odds of survival.
But, in the case of such an extremely cold ring color, the body goes into a guarded state. It's more of a "self-preservation" mode. Logically, the body considers the biological functions of the organs in the torso to be more essential to survival than your hands or feet. So, it channels most of the blood in the body to those internal organs.
The body does this by narrowing the blood vessels in the extremities (hands and feet), especially in the micro-capillaries near the surface of the skin. This causes the temperature in the hands and feet to become cold due to the lack of blood circulation. Because of this, your mood stone cools down and turns to black. This also has the unfortunate effect of raising blood pressure to levels that are especially dangerous to those with heart or other circulatory conditions.
Making major decisions when your mood ring is black could be disastrous. Any decision made out of fear is usually going to be the wrong one (the only exception might be fear of a spouse or partner in an abusive relationship, or fear for your life in a dangerous situation). When your mood ring color is black, it's important to force yourself to use logic as much as possible, as such strong emotions can be misleading.
Of all the mood ring colors, black is one of the only colors I advise people to try to willfully change. To change your mood ring color, you will have to "reground" yourself and take the necessary steps to relax. Here is what I do to get my emotions under control and turn my mood ring stone back to blue, or green or purple:
  • Find a safe, comfortable place to sit down
  • Focus on taking very deep breaths
  • Close your eyes
  • Begin counting backwards from 100 to 1
  • Remember your deep breathing - it's very important
  • Focus only on the numbers (counting backwards) and your deep breathing
If you suddenly find yourself counting forward, it means your mind has "drifted off" and you are not concentrating on the numbers. To complete the entire exercise takes less than 5 minutes and it's well worth it. Before you know it, you'll be feeling better and your mood ring color will be a nice shade of blue or green.
